The Necessary May Speak: Exploring the Aesthetics of Ganesh Haloi

Lecture by Ina Puri, moderated by Natasha Ginwala

This lecture-presentation will elaborate upon the practice of the Indian artist Ganesh Haloi (* 1936) who has developed a unique vocabulary of abstraction over several decades, drawing together aspects of rhythm, improvisation, and symmetry from the natural world in combination with studies of sacred architecture, landscapes, and archaeological sites across India. Haloi has played a pioneering role in Calcutta’s art scene and has evolved an iconography that draws upon his long stint at the ancient Ajanta and Ellora caves.
