The Self and the Other – Culture on Bodies, Places, and Times

Workshop as part of the Discursive Program

Repetitions of patterns settle on the body in different spaces over specific periods of time. These patterns can be knowledge_emotions_behaviors and become institutions—where the self_other determined un_freedom of different bodies_places_times is essential. In the process of instituting, understanding serves as a hegemonic tool for thinking, saying, and doing. Somatics, which means “concerning the body,” has no place in the process of instituting. What if we make space to make somatics palpable? How can we counter this hegemony by approaching art as a system of thought and using art to confront our own un_freedom?

Arootin Mirzakhani lives_works with a focus on the use of art as a thinking-system to situate hegemonic conditions structurally within togetherness—one’s own un_freedom and that of others is essential.

Focus Tours invite you to explore inside and outside the exhibition space and sharpen your seeing, listening, and thinking, based on specific themes. Focus Tours are a mix between public tour and workshop. They are free of charge and are organized by the Berlin Biennale educational team.

This workshop is part of the discursive program of the 12th Berlin Biennale. Taking the restitution debate as a starting point, it explores how colonialism and imperialism continue to operate in the present.
