Book launch with Natasha A. Kelly

Milli’s Awakening. Black Women, Art and Resistance
Book launch
With Natasha A. Kelly in conversation with Diana Hartmann Maciré Bakayako, Maseho, Nadu Hormann, Naomi Beukes-Meyer, Patricia Vester, Sandrine Micossé-Aikins, and Zari Harat, moderated by Yvette Mutumba

Inspired by the Black feminist tradition of quilting, Natasha A. Kelly’s film Milli’s Awakening (2018), on view at the 10th Berlin Biennale, brings together the voices of eight Black German women of different generations. Through their artistic practices all of them have found a way to define a self-determined position within white German mainstream society. The result is a documentary that simultaneously reflects the diversity and connectivity of their (her-)stories.

The unshortened interviews are now being published in her book Milli’s Awakening. Black Women, Art and Resistance (Orlanda Verlag, 2018). For the book launch moderated by Yvette Mutumba from the 10th Berlin Biennale’s curatorial team, Natasha A. Kelly will engage in a dialogue with her protagonists, going back to the past in order to reflect the present and articulate visions of the future.
