In the art world, the words invention and innovation are used both frequently and interchangeably. But invention involves bringing something new into the world, whereas innovation means putting something new on the market. Working from this distinction, Toke Lykkeberg will outline how avant-garde artists such as Marcel Duchamp were innovators who commercialized the inventions of lesser-known creatives such as Alphonse Allais.
The talk is followed by a conversation with artist Simon Denny. In exhibitions such as The Innovator’s Dilemmalast year at PS1 in New York, Simon Denny addresses the culture of entrepreneurship and its affinity to artistic practice. His work Blockchain Visionaries (with Linda Kantchev) is currently on display at the ESMT European School of Management and Technology as part of the 9th Berlin Biennale.
