DISCREET Insecurity Counseling #2 – Sex & Secrecy: Fatal attractions in Counter-Intelligence

With Armen Avanessian/Alexander Martos and accomplices

Secrecy and sexual culture have a long subcutaneous connection. In fighting over hegemony concerning new surveillance practices, be they state- or corporate-driven, technoactivism is still dominated by boys, toys & paranoia. Is there a structural sexual exploitation circulating through left networks, as they seem according to latest developments around Julian Assange or Jacob Applebaum? Or are we facing professional negative campaigns aiming at systematically discrediting and at “character assassination” of prominent spokespersons? How shall people, who are politically engaged for civil rights and for the primacy of the political, prepare for both scenarios at the same time?

Counsellor: Anne Roth, (political scientist and activist with a focus on surveillance, discourses of extremism and net feminism; contributor for the NSA enquiry commission of the Bundestag for “Die Linke”)

DISCREET is a project by Armen Avanessian and Alexander Martos in collaboration with Christopher Roth. It is commissioned and coproduced by Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art with the support of Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb, Bundeskanzleramt der Republik Österreich – Kunstsektion, and Rudolf Augstein Stiftung.
