On the Silver Globe

Screening with Andrzej Żuławski

Andrzej Żuławski is one of the most prominent Polish film directors today. His films depicts the condition of being human in its most extreme dimension. After the roundbreaking debut feature Trzecia czêœæ nocy (The Third Part of Night, 1971), his second feature film Diabeł (The Devil, 1972), was banned by communist censorship and only released in 1988. Following the success of his French debut, L’Important c’est d’aimer (1975), Żuławski returned to Poland and spent two years making his "space oddity" Na srebrnym globie (On the Silver Globe, 1987), based on the science fiction novel by his grandfather of the same name. The largest film production ever in Poland, the project was halted by the communist Minister of Culture. Only in 1987 did Żuławski finally edit the footage, which remained a monument to a never completed film masterpiece. Another film by Żuławski, Mes nuits sont plus belles que vos jours (My nights are more beautiful than your days, 1989) gave its name to the entire night program of the 5th Berlin Biennale. He will attend the screening in person.
