WAR_SAW

Wilhelm Sasnal

Slanted, geometrical letters made of fuse attached to a wall form a word. Ignite! As the smoke clears, it becomes apparent that the name of an eastern European capital breaks down into two, with the division creating an either/or situation. The very name “Warsaw” seems to hold both its split identity and a promise of ill fate; Sasnal’s piece can thus be seen as a figure for the broken city. The burnt-out tattoo on the wall, used by the artist to mark the surrounding architecture, works as a personal signature, alluding at the same time to the imprint on history and urban tissue of a city that bore witness to ravages of destruction.
