Congress 3000

Haus der Kulturen der Welt

From 1.–3.10.1998, congress 3000 took place in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Combining a festival and a symposium, the hybrid character of the 1st Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art was reflected by discussions, movie shows, public readings, performances and a comprehensive music program. In addition tot he Berlin/Berlin exhibition, congress 3000 presented positions and discourses on various cultural areas in theory and practice. They focused on phenomenons specific to Berlin, at the same time bearing substantial, formal and methodical importance fort he contemporary art production. congress 3000 erected an interdisciplinary forum for a number of local and international artists. Film producers, architects, theorists, writers, musicians, designers introduced themselves and their work. The film program, for example, presented feature and documentary films displaying various perspectives of and on Berlin. Young authors from Berlin showed their word creations by means of performed poetry, during the night, the comprehensive music program with DJs and live-music presented numerous styles of music which developed in Berlin at that time. Subjects concerning social and aesthetical interdependences on both a local and a global level were discussed in the symposium taking place at the same time. Thus, congress 3000 brought matters together, heterogeneous positions and enabled innovations. The location of the event, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt functioned as an intersection and breeding-place for artistic and cultural forms of expression during this time.
