DISCREET Training #1 – Cryptologocentrism

Training by: Paul Feigelfeld (Researcher at Center for Digital Studies/CDC at Leuphana University, Lüneburg)

Cryptology and the concept of code is at the very core of information technology and occidental scientific culture, and defines the nature of post digital cultures, not only in terms of encrypted secure communication and the discussion around surveillance and intelligence services today, but as a media technological apriori, a conditio sine qua non for our technological condition. In his workshop, Paul Feigelfeld will have a look at the significant role that cryptology plays in the media history of knowledge, explain the key concepts in a historical overview from the early days of writing to technologies like public key cryptography and TOR of today and try to address their influence on epistemologic as well as artistic theory and practice. The main focus is directed towards questions and perspectives of authenticity and the individual in an outlook on the near future, in political, social, and artistic spheres, where things like genetic fingerprints and block chain are becoming the new means of identification and authentification, from passports and bank accounts, online identities, digital labour and communication, to defining the authenticity of a work of art, digital rights management and cloud storage, as well as the right to be forgotten, freedom of information, and anonymity. The workshop includes a hands-on cryptology introduction (encrypted email and messaging, TOR, darknet shopping etc.)

DISCREET is a project by Armen Avanessian and Alexander Martos in collaboration with Christopher Roth. It is commissioned and coproduced by Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art with the support of Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/bpb, Bundeskanzleramt der Republik Österreich – Kunstsektion, and Rudolf Augstein Stiftung.
