Berlin Biennale
6th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art
11.6.–8.8.2010
Satellite Projects

In cooperation with the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts five so-called „Satellite Projects“ have been developed by students and invited artists. Based on the 6th Berlin Biennale’s contents, and working in cooperation with a primary school in Berlin-Kreuzberg, they create alternative approaches to art and bring the local public and various social groups into dialog with the exhibition.

The 6th Berlin Biennale is orbited by five projects receiving and reflecting its messages as well as sending out replies in return. These Satellite Projects intend to open up a space in which the exhibition can be approached, tested, questioned or re-read from a local and/or individual perspective. What does an exhibition transmit before the background of a specifically local context? How close are the exhibited artefacts to the world we live in; and how relevant are these artworks with regard to the local situation and its residents? Does the encounter with the works in the show change the way we perceive a local situation? Or is the content of the exhibition rather irrelevant in relation to the purchasing power, the increase in value and the general buzz such an event brings to a quarter? By foraging into local resonances these satellite projects attempt a kind of reality-check for an exhibition investigating the notion of "reality".

The Room of the Satellite Projects – Dresdener Strasse 14
During the 6th Berlin Biennale the base station of the satellite projects is located at a shop at Dresdener Strasse 14. Here we offer a programme of events addressed to the general public, the neighboring communities and education staff.
The space was designed by Anja Edelmann, set designer and graduate of the MA "art in context". However, over the course of the two months of the biennial the participating artists as well as the general public are invited to continue transforming the place generating a local space of resonance. These collected resonances and responses will be presented at the finissage of the satellite projects.
Finnissage: 28.7.2010, from 6 pm, Dresdener Strasse 14

The Satellite Projects are realized by the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts, in cooperation with Förderverein Art in Context and the Nürtingen Primary School in Berlin-Kreuzberg, and are supported by Berliner Projektfonds Kulturelle Bildung.
